CIVIC United Front (CUF) presidential candidate Gombo Samandito has demanded that the government issue a clear position on instances of abductions of specific individuals, as the silence puts the public on edge.
Speaking at a press conference in Mtwara yesterday, he said that even with several such instances being reported the government has remained silent. "We want the government to tell us what is going on, who is involved and why these incidents keep occurring," he stated.
He said it was the duty of state agencies to periodically inform the public on steps being taken to curb such occurrences so that calm is restored among the people and anxiety is removed.
"This silence is dangerous. It creates room for rumours, disorientation and even illegitimate appeals for demonstrations or suggestion of blocking the polls," he stated.
He appealed to the public to use the voting on October 29 as an opportunity to bring about substantial changes by constitutional means, instead of being involved in agitation and threatening the peace.
He blasted seditious material circulating on social media, urging that the public authorities take action against individuals spreading information intended to raise fears and divisions in society.
Touching on the matter raised by the family of ex-CCM top cadre Humphrey Polepole, he said that if there are suspicions or any event, it is better that the government issues an official statement instead of haphazard statements appearing and disturbing the public atmosphere.
Speaking at a rally alongside CCM presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan, former party secretary general Dr Bashiru Ally praised the president for having prepared the people to participate in the general election, since wherever she goes her meetings have seen large numbers of people turning up to listen to her.
He said the country's leader who is seeking accord of the people again, has met with trials, has been tested and prevailed against tough contentions, in which case the country is assured she will safely navigate the country to a better future.
"As the country has remained one, our party has continued to be one, security and peace prevail and in a difficult period of sudden change of government, we have crossed that situation," he said, ruling out chances of instability arising from planting material on social media and causing widespread commotion.
