THE Embassy of China has praised Tanzania’s “historic” role in spearheading the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 in 1971 that restored China’s lawful seat at the United Nations and cemented the one-China principle as an international consensus.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday during a media briefing titled ‘UNGA Resolution 2758 is Unshakable and the One-China Principle Must Be Upheld’ Chinese Ambassador Chen Mingjian praised Tanzania’s unwavering support for China on the global stage.
“From its founding, Tanzania firmly supported China’s reinstatement at the UN,” she said. “We will never forget Ambassador Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, then Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the UN, who powerfully spoke in support of China’s rightful representation — emphasizing that a quarter of the world’s population remained unrepresented.”
Ambassador Chen highlighted the moment when Dr Salim stood and applauded the adoption of Resolution 2758 as deeply symbolic to the Chinese people. “It demonstrated Tanzania’s solidarity with China on a core issue of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
UNGA Resolution 2758 recognized the People’s Republic of China as “the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations.”
“This resolution reflects the universal consensus of the international community,” she said. “Tanzania’s consistent support is historic and invaluable, and we commend its steadfast commitment to the one-China principle.”
The envoy also noted that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the completion of the TAZARA Railway, a landmark project symbolizing China-Tanzania friendship. “This anniversary holds deep significance for the relationship between our countries,” she said.
China, she added, remains ready to deepen cooperation with Tanzania across political, economic and cultural dimensions.
“We aim to implement the consensus reached by our heads of state, strengthen mutual trust and build a closer China-Tanzania community with a shared future.”
Citing President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to Beijing, Chen said the high-level engagement reaffirmed Tanzania’s enduring diplomatic ties with China. During her meeting with President Xi Jinping, China committed to elevating Tanzania as a model of high-quality China-Africa cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
She added that Tanzania continues to lead in China-Africa relations, with China’s investments yielding significant results across sectors.
As part of broader China-Africa collaboration, President Xi pledged over $50 billion in aid and concessional loans over the next three years. The funds are set to support Africa’s modernization, particularly in infrastructure and agriculture.
