ENVIRONMENTAL stakeholders joined forces at Rungwe Beaches in Dar es Salaam over the weekend in a major beach clean-up along the Indian Ocean, marking World Environment Day with action and impact.

Organized in collaboration with environmental organizations, the initiative successfully collected nearly one tonne of waste, primarily plastic and other non-biodegradable materials that threaten marine and coastal ecosystems.

The clean-up event forms part of a broader commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Speaking during the activity, one of the organizers emphasized that the event goes beyond symbolic gestures and represents a genuine commitment to protecting the environment.

“We are continuing with this clean-up initiative alongside environmental education. This is not just a one-day event it is a clear demonstration of our long-term dedication to sustainability and community engagement,” she said.

Speaking during the event, Head of Communications, Marketing and Branding, Desderia Mwegelo, emphasized that the activity is not just symbolic but reflects a genuine commitment to environmental protection.

“We are continuing with this clean-up initiative alongside environmental education. This is not just a one-day event it is a clear demonstration of our long term dedication to sustainability and community engagement,” she stated.

She added that the clean-up was part of the bank’s “Here for Good” global program, which is built around three key pillars: Sustainable Finance, Being a Responsible Company, and Inclusive Communities.

“Collecting nearly 100 bags of waste is a commendable milestone, but it also reminds us that we must act collectively to find lasting solutions,” she stressed.

By engaging with organizations like Nipe Fagio, the institution continues to play an active role in building not only a resilient economy but also a cleaner, safer environment for present and future generations.
