The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment in the compressed natural gas (CNG) value chain.

This initiative is a key step in supporting the government's efforts to promote the use of clean energy across the country.

Speaking today during a panel discussion at the 11th East African Petroleum Conference and Exhibition (EAPCE’25) in Dar es Salaam, EWURA's Director General, Dr James Andilile, highlighted the authority's ongoing efforts to attract investors to the sector.

The three-day conference, which commenced yesterday, has brought together stakeholders from various East African countries to discuss developments in the oil and gas industry.

Dr Andilile emphasised that one of the significant measures already taken to encourage investment is the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on essential CNG infrastructure, a move aimed at making the sector more attractive to investors.

He said Tanzania has an opportunity to capitalize on its natural gas reserves to transition from conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel to CNG, which is a cleaner and more cost-effective alternative.

With the government owning a large fleet of motor vehicles, policymakers are being urged to lead the way in adopting CNG for official transport.
