The government has been urged to launch a clear and open public education campaign to address the increasing misuse of P2 emergency contraceptive pills, which poses serious health risks.

Special Seats MP Dr. Tea Ntala raised the concerns in Parliament on June 3 while contributing to the debate on the Ministry of Health’s 2025/2026 budget estimates.

She pointed to a growing trend of using the pills without proper guidance or medical advice, warning that many users are unaware of the potential dangers.

According to Dr. Ntala, researchers have identified up to 10 severe side effects linked to misuse of the pills.

These include disrupted blood circulation, increased risk of stroke, reproductive cancers, repeated miscarriages, abnormal menstrual bleeding, and vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections.

Dr. Ntala criticized the government for remaining silent on the issue and called on the Ministry of Health to take immediate action by educating the public—especially the youth—on the responsible use of emergency contraception and its health implications.
