Habemus Papam! President Samia congratulates Pope Leo XIV
PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has extended her heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost following his election as Pope Leo XIV, the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a message posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, President Samia wrote:
"Habemus Papam! Heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, on being elected as the Leader of the Catholic Church worldwide."
The Head of State added: On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I wish you all the best in your service to the Church and the world at large. May Almighty God guide and strengthen you."
The new pontiff was elected by the College of Cardinals on Thursday, May 8, and greeted the world with his first Urbi et Orbi blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
President Samia joins other world leaders in welcoming the new pope, whose leadership begins at a time of great global and spiritual challenges.
