THE Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, has expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the eight-storey Tanzania Geological and Geophysical Centre (TGC) building in Arusha.

Speaking during a site visit, Mavunde revealed that the project, expected to cost over 33bn/-, will become a vital hub for training, trade, and gemstone mineral processing, aimed at adding value to the country’s mineral resources.

Addressing journalists after inspecting the site, the minister explained that the centre will provide services including mineral identification, research, professional training, and function as a one-stop centre for mineral trade.

“This project will bring about a major transformation in the mining sector. It will feature classrooms, workshops, laboratories, hostels, and university offices,” he said, urging contractors to accelerate construction and ensure timely completion as per the contract.

Engineer Julian Mosha and project supervisor Jumanne Nshimba reported that the construction is progressing well.

Arusha Regional Commissioner, Kenani Kihongosi, noted that the facility will significantly boost the regional economy through mineral trade and create employment opportunities for young people with skills in geology and mineral processing.

Meanwhile, miners and mineral traders’ representatives in Arusha have commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the investment, highlighting it as a clear sign of the government’s commitment to developing the mining sector.

“For the first time, we see the government investing in such infrastructure specifically for mining. We are grateful for the recognition of small-scale miners and mineral traders,” said Alfred Mwaswenya of the Arusha Regional Miners Association (AREMA).
