THE Ministry of Health has reported a significant rise in COVID-19 infections from 1.4 percent in February to 16.8 percent in April 2025.

According to the Government Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Grace Magembe, this increase has been most notable in the Dar es Salaam region.

She stated that COVID-19, first detected in Tanzania in March 2020, continues to circulate at low levels similar to other respiratory illnesses, with annual fluctuations in case numbers.

The ministry is closely monitoring respiratory disease trends nationwide and providing daily updates.

From January to April 2025, there has been an increase in respiratory disease reports, particularly in Dar es Salaam. Using surveillance systems in place since 2008, health officials are tracking pathogens, case spikes, and the potential emergence of new fast-spreading viruses.

Laboratory tests show seasonal variations in influenza viruses, but no new virus capable of causing a pandemic has been detected.
