ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has attributed the significant achievements of his government to the substantial contribution of the House of Representatives.
President Mwinyi made the remarks here on Monday at a farewell dinner and awards ceremony honouring members of the tenth House of Representatives. The event celebrated their five years of service and recognized outstanding contributions.
Dr Mwinyi expressed deep appreciation for the legislature's pivotal role in nation-building. He emphasized that the effective performance of the three pillars of government—the Judiciary, the Executive, and the House of Representatives—has significantly contributed to better public service delivery.
He highlighted the House of Representatives' efficiency in law-making, scrutinizing the government budget, and overseeing the execution of government projects and expenditure. This oversight, he noted, has been a crucial catalyst for the government's improved performance in serving the citizens.
President Mwinyi stressed the importance of maintaining strong cooperation and good relations among these three state organs for any nation's success. He called for the continuation of this positive relationship to uphold good governance principles and drive further development.
He further elaborated that strong collaboration between the government and the legislature enhances accountability. Effective oversight by the House of Representatives, he added, boosts efficiency in public service and improves societal well-being.
Dr Mwinyi also used the opportunity to urge the outgoing members to actively participate in the upcoming General Election by voting. He stressed that every eligible citizen should exercise their right to vote, as this upholds the principles of democracy and good governance, and respects the work of constitutionally established bodies like the National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).
The farewell marks the official dissolution of the tenth House of Representatives by President Mwinyi, effective August 13 this year, as it concludes its five-year term as stipulated by Zanzibar's constitution.
Second Vice President, Hemed Suleiman Abdullah, commended President Mwinyi for his support to the House members in addressing constituents' development needs. He also lauded the House's cooperative approach with other state organs.
Zubeir Ali Maulid, Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated that the House has earned a commendable reputation among the people of Zanzibar, Tanzania, and globally, for its disciplined conduct throughout its five years of service.
