IN a move to enhance healthcare standards across Tanzania, PharmAccess, an organisation focused on improving healthcare accessibility and affordability in Africa has partnered with Nu-Tarna Tanzania to expand use of SafeCare, an internationally recognised health quality assessment tool in the country.
The strategic partnership will see Nu-Tarna become the licensed partner to implement SafeCare to help health facilities identify gaps in service delivery and guide them in making step-by-step improvements.
Speaking at the signing in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Dr Peter Risha of PharmAccess said the initiative is about building trust in local healthcare systems.
He said the agreement will enable Nu-Tarna, a local firm that promotes quality health services, roll out the SafeCare system in more local clinics, particularly in areas where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge.
“Through the approach, health workers will receive mentorship and tailored plans to raise standards and work toward internationally accredited levels of service. This is a way to empower healthcare providers with the tools and data they need to grow,” he said.
According to Dr Risha, the new partnership will help bring much-needed improvements to healthcare services in communities by helping local clinics and health centres assess and upgrade quality of care they provide.
He noted that in communities across Tanzania, many small clinics operate with limited oversight or support, often leaving patients uncertain about the quality of care.
Nasra Kondo, Nu-Tarna managing director noted that SafeCare programme is designed to facilitate provision of quality health services for all as it brings transparency, encourage improvement and allow even the smallest health centres to track their progress over time.
“The programme’s expansion will particularly benefit underserved populations, including those in rural areas where healthcare options are often limited,” she said.
“This could really change how people experience healthcare in their neighbourhoods. It’s not just about equipment—it’s about making the system work better.”
She said through a data-driven approach, Nu-Tarna assists healthcare providers in implementing innovative quality improvements, offers capacity building and mentorship to healthcare workers and guides facilities toward achieving international standards and accreditation.
