TANZANIA is taking concrete steps to enhance its institutional capacity and ensure transparency and accountability in the use of donor resources, the government has declared.
Dr Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, the Treasury permanent secretary, made this affirmation in talks with Nathan Belete, the World Bank multi-country representative, on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank spring meetings.
The semi-annual meetings whose spring session is considered as pivotal provide a global platform for economic dialogue and development financing
“This meeting reinforces our shared commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable development that directly improves lives,” she said, in a meeting attended by her Energy counterpart Felchesmi Mramba, Dr Juma Malik Akil (Finance and Planning principal secretary for Zanzibar), Amina Khamis Shaaban - Treasury deputy permanent secretary, and Dr Fred Msemwa of the Planning Commission.
Others are cabinet secretary Nsubili Joshua and Dr Blandina Kilama, economic affairs advisor to the president, officials said.
The Treasury said in a briefing that World Bank officials expressed confidence in Tanzania’s economic direction, pledged support in energy, roads, digital technology, education and health.
The session concluded with mutual commitment to advancing impactful projects that support Tanzania’s development vision, officials noted, explaining that Tanzania reaffirmed its strong commitment to deepening its development cooperation with the World Bank.
It aired the need to focus on accelerating the implementation of ongoing projects and advancing new priorities under the International Development Association’s 21st replenishment cycle (IDA 21).
This was the key aspect of the high-level consultations centred on evaluating the performance of current World Bank-supported projects in Tanzania, they said.
Improving coordination mechanisms and aligning future investments with core aspects of national development strategies under the IDA 21 umbrella was extensively discussed.
This cycle is a crucial funding window that supports development priorities in low-income countries, with emphasis on poverty reduction, resilience and inclusive growth, the permanent secretary intoned.
