CCM will always cherish Nyerere’s legacy – Nchimbi

CCM Secretary General Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi has reaffirmed the ruling party’s unwavering commitment to honoring and upholding the enduring legacy of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere which laid the foundation for Tanzania’s unity, harmony, and development.

Speaking during a visit to Nyerere's grave in Butiama, Mara Region, Dr. Nchimbi highlighted the continued relevance of Nyerere’s philosophy in shaping the nation’s development trajectory.

“Mwalimu Nyerere built a united nation where people live in harmony. He championed agriculture as the backbone of our economy and valued education as a tool to empower the youth and drive change,” said Dr. Nchimbi.

As part of his visit, Dr. Nchimbi also toured the under-construction Mwalimu Julius Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT), a project dedicated to Nyerere’s vision.

Dr. Nchimbi praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan's current leadership for carrying back Nyerere’s ideals through the 4Rs — Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding — a guiding principle focused on peace, progress, and inclusivity.

“This is the moment to truly embrace what Mwalimu Nyerere stood for,” he added. “CCM remains steadfast in promoting his values in every aspect of national life.”

Echoing these sentiments, Prof. Caroline Nombo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, noted that Nyerere’s legacy continues through educational institutions that embody his commitment to learning and development.

She cited the establishment of MJNUAT — a project initiated under CCM’s 2010–2015 Manifesto — as a lasting tribute to Nyerere’s contributions.

“In May 2023, the government allocated  2.6bn/- for the construction of the Oswald Mang'ombe campus, marking a key milestone in achieving our vision,” said Prof. Nombo.

She further noted that the university received 102.5bn/- from the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project, positioning it to become a national hub for agricultural innovation and technology.

Prof. Nombo stressed the Ministry’s determination to develop MJNUAT into a center of excellence, in line with Nyerere’s vision of education as a pillar of national transformation.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Lesakit Mellau also affirmed the university’s dedication to upholding Nyerere’s values, noting that while the institution honors its historical roots, it is equally focused on the future through advanced research and training, particularly in agriculture.
