OVER 200 pupils from various schools in Dar es Salaam Region have been equipped with new tools to combat gender-based violence and claim their rights through education and sports bonanza hosted by the youth-led organisation, Msichana Initiative.
The Amani Girls’ Club Bonanza, held recently, brought together children from 10 primary schools in Kinondoni, Kigamboni, Ubungo, Ilala and Temeke districts for a day of learning, games, art and open discussion—delivering important messages on self-awareness, leadership and protection against abuse.
Speaking during the event, Jacob Maduki, Advocacy Officer at Msichana Initiative, said the event was part of a growing movement to arm girls with the confidence to “say no” to harmful practices such as early pregnancies and forced marriage while also encouraging boys to become allies in promoting gender equality.
“Every child has the right to live without fear, to grow up safely and to pursue their dreams. “Through platforms like this, children can speak freely, learn how to protect themselves and use their talents to spread messages that can shift mindsets in their communities” he said.
The bonanza combined sports competitions with debates, poetry recitals, art exhibitions and talent shows—all centred on child protection and gender equality. Children also learned how to recognise different forms of abuse and where to seek help. Teachers and parents’ representatives praised the approach for making serious topics accessible.
Asha Seif, a standard seven pupil at Unubini Primary School, said: “I’ve learnt that I have the right to speak my mind and to ask for help if I feel unsafe.” Guest Judge Gladness Kifaruka urged pupils to believe in themselves and work hard towards their ambitions: “Your dreams are achievable, and your success starts with the efforts you make today.”
The Amani Girls’ Club programme is implemented in schools nationwide with the support of teachers, communities and education stakeholders.
Its central aim is to ensure that every girl grows up in a safe, supportive environment that champions equality and social progress. Msichana Initiative will continue expanding the programme as part of its mission to advance gender equality and empower girls to lead in future.
