THE Mara Regional Commissioner, Evans Mtambi, has declared that the government will not grant any further extensions to the contractor managing the 28 towns’ water project in Mugumu town, Serengeti District, beyond December this year.

The 28 towns’ water project includes Mugumu among its beneficiaries, aiming to improve access to clean and safe water for the residents.

This project is part of a larger, $500 million initiative funded by the   government through a soft loan from India. The project in Mugumu involves constructing a 15 MLD intake well at the new Manchira dam, a 14.5 MLD water treatment plant, and a 2,000 kl ground service reservoir, along with a 32 km distributary network to deliver water to homes.

Mtambi spoke during a recent site inspection, noting that the contractor failed to complete the project by the April deadline stipulated in the contract and has since requested an extension until December.

“I want to make it clear that no additional extensions will be granted. This project must be completed and begin benefiting the community,” he stressed.

He added that the government has provided enabling conditions, including timely payments, but progress has stalled.

Mtambi pointed out there is no valid reason for the delay, as the contractor has no outstanding claims after receiving funds and materials on site.

He urged project supervisors and the contractor to collaborate and ensure timely completion so residents can access clean, safe water for drinking and other needs.

The director of Musoma Water and Environmental Sanitation Authority (MUWASA), Nicas Mugisha, said the 21bn/- project began in April 2023 and is now expected to be completed by December, this year following a granted extension.

Mugisha noted that completing the project will alleviate water shortages affecting over 100,000 people in Mugumu town.
