CCM presidential candidate Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan led senior party leaders in paying tribute to the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, the founding President of Zanzibar, during a solemn ceremony in Zanzibar.
Dr Samia, who is also the national chairperson of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), was joined by CCM’s presidential candidate for Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, and other top party officials in offering prayers at Karume’s grave located at the party’s Kisiwandui headquarters.
The leaders gathered at the site on 19 September 2025, where they laid wreaths and offered special prayers in memory of Karume, who is widely recognised as a central architect of Zanzibar’s revolution and the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar that formed the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964.
Samia is in the Isles on her campaign trail, where during her rallies in the past two days, she has pledged to boost the blue economy, expand infrastructure and uplift citizens’ livelihoods through targeted social and economic programmes.
