PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is set to officially inaugurate the long-awaited Kigongo-Busisi Bridge on June 19, marking a major milestone in Tanzania’s transport infrastructure development.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made the announcement yesterday while addressing residents of Sengerema District during his two-day visit in Mwanza Region. Majaliwa urged residents from across the Lake Zone and beyond to attend the event, highlighting the bridge’s significance in solving decades-long transportation and logistical challenges across Lake Victoria.

“The bridge is a game-changer. I call on citizens from all benefiting regions to witness its launch. It marks the end of long queues and delays at the ferry crossing,” he said. Minister for Works Abdallah Ulega confirmed that the bridge, which stretches three kilometres across the lake, is 100 percent complete.

“I’m pleased to announce to the people of Sengerema and the nation that the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge is fully ready. We’ve invited President Samia to inaugurate it on June 19 and celebrate this major national achievement with Tanzanians,” Ulega stated.

In a separate engagement, Majaliwa condemned the theft of medical equipment at Sengerema District Hospital, calling it a betrayal of public trust and a threat to health service delivery.

While laying the foundation stone for a new administrative block and officially opening the district hospital at Mwabaruhi Ward, Majaliwa revealed that medical items worth 28.51m/- had been stolen.

“This theft is unacceptable. Those involved must be prosecuted to send a strong message. Public resources must be safeguarded,” he said. The Prime Minister noted the theft of three motorcycles linked to the hospital, which were later recovered outside the region.

He instructed Mwanza Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda to immediately replace Acting Medical Officer in charge of the hospital due to repeated cases of theft. He also directed the District Medical Officer to conduct daily inspections of medical supplies to prevent further loss and ensure accountability.

Responding to reports of medicine shortages at dispensaries and health centres, Majaliwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to consistent drug supply, urging proper use and supervision at all levels. Mtanda confirmed that suspects had already been arrested in connection with the stolen medical supplies and pledged to appoint a new officer-in-charge for the hospital without delay.
