TANZANIA'S digital transformation continues its rapid ascent, with the number of internet users reaching an unprecedented 54.1 million by the end of the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.
The significant milestone, revealed in the latest statistics from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), marks a dramatic increase from 29 million users in 2020, underscoring the nation's robust investment in digital infrastructure and the burgeoning public appetite for online services.
Over the past five years, Tanzania has experienced a consistent surge in internet penetration, propelled by the expansion of mobile broadband coverage, a decrease in smartphone costs, and heightened public awareness of digital opportunities.
From 2020 to 2024, the country welcomed over 25 million new users, averaging more than 6 million new internet subscribers annually. This remarkable growth has been largely fuelled by the widespread availability of 4G and 5G networks, the expansion of fiber-optic infrastructure, and concerted efforts by mobile network operators and the government to promote affordable data access.
The ripple effects of this increased internet connectivity are profound, touching every facet of Tanzania’s economy and society. From bustling urban centres to remote communities, internet access has become an indispensable tool for education, agriculture, finance, commerce, healthcare, and governance.
“Internet access is no longer a luxury — it is a fundamental enabler of development," stated Dr. Jabiri Bakari, director general of the TCRA. "We are working to ensure every Tanzanian, regardless of location, can harness the benefits of connectivity."
Digital platforms have revolutionized how Tanzanians conduct business. Mobile money services, e-commerce platforms, digital marketing, and remote working opportunities have empowered thousands of youth and women entrepreneurs to sell products, access wider markets, and actively participate in the digital economy.
In the education sector, the internet has unlocked new frontiers for e-learning, providing students and teachers with unparalleled access to global knowledge resources. Similarly, the health sector has benefited immensely through improved access to telemedicine, sophisticated health information systems, and online consultations.
The government, through the TCRA and the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology, has been instrumental in fostering a conducive environment for this digital expansion. Key initiatives include the establishment of digital clubs – platforms designed to equip students with knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) – and programs promoting girls' inclusivity, such as "Girls in ICT" forums and "Cyber Champions" competitions.
Dr Bakari recently reiterated the Authority’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive and secure digital transformation. "Statistics show that the number of women, youth, and rural citizens accessing internet services continues to increase, thanks to government efforts through TCRA to promote investment in the communications sector," he affirmed.
He also highlighted recent strategic moves: "Recently, we conducted a spectrum auction in which the participating and successful companies are set to expand the coverage of their services, especially in underserved areas, and enhance the provision of 5G services.”
With internet users now comprising over 60 percent of the population, Tanzania stands on the brink of a fully-fledged digital economy. Experts believe the current wave of growth is further driven by the ongoing adoption of 5G technology, the expansion of data centers, advancements in cloud computing, and the proliferation of e-government services aimed at improving public service delivery.
However, as connectivity continues to expand, so too does the imperative for enhanced cybersecurity, robust data protection, and comprehensive digital literacy. The TCRA has pledged to strengthen regulatory frameworks that not only foster innovation but also safeguard users’ rights and promote responsible digital usage, ensuring a secure and equitable digital future for all Tanzanians.
