The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has emerged as the overall winner of the prestigious excellence award in the preparation of high-quality financial statements in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
The award was presented during the 2023/2024 National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) ceremony held on December 4, 2025, in Dar es Salaam.
In this year’s competition, TPA topped the Public Institutions category, outperforming other major government bodies. The Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) secured second place, while the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) took third position. This achievement reinforces TPA’s position as one of the most transparent and well-managed public institutions in Tanzania.
TPA’s victory is largely attributed to its consistent demonstration of accountability, transparency, and professional excellence in financial management. The Authority received an unqualified audit opinion—commonly referred to as a “clean audit report”—from the Office of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG). This clean audit was instrumental in strengthening TPA’s eligibility for the NBAA award, highlighting its commitment to adhering to internationally recognized financial reporting standards.
According to NBAA, TPA’s financial statements stood out for their clarity, accuracy, and strict compliance with IFRS requirements. The reports effectively reflected transparency in financial operations, prudent budget implementation, and sound managerial accountability, especially in the execution of major strategic projects across the Authority. These qualities collectively positioned TPA as a model institution in public financial governance.
Speaking during the award ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Laurent Deogratius Luswetula (MP), applauded all 86 participating institutions, with special recognition to the winners. He emphasized the critical importance of proper and reliable financial reporting, noting that well-prepared financial statements are essential for strengthening accountability within both public and private sector organizations. He further stressed that adherence to international standards not only enhances credibility but also builds public trust and supports national economic development.
After receiving the award, TPA Director General, Plasduce Mkeli Mbossa, expressed gratitude and pride in the institution’s achievement. He highlighted that the success was a result of strong teamwork, dedication, and close collaboration between employees, management, and the Board of Directors. Mbossa reaffirmed TPA’s commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and continuing to improve financial performance and reporting in the coming years.
TPA has shown consistent progress in the NBAA awards over recent years. Notably, in the 2021/2022 financial year, the Authority won second place in the same category. This upward trajectory reflects the Authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen internal controls, enhance financial systems, and foster a culture of accountability.
A total of 86 public and private sector organizations competed for the NBAA excellence awards for the 2023/2024 financial year. This wide participation demonstrates the growing awareness and commitment among Tanzanian institutions to adopt best practices in financial management and reporting. As TPA continues to shine, it sets an important benchmark for other institutions striving for excellence in financial governance.
