A SPIRITED showing by Tanzania's senior national cricketers catapulted them to a six-wicket rout of Bahrain in the Quad Nations T20 Cup – Arjun Menon Memorial clash at the TCA Oval in Blantyre last Tuesday.
It turned out to be an encouraging turnaround for Tanzania's cricketers, given they got off to an impressive start after walloping Malawi in the opening tie last Sunday and suffered a loss to Germany the following day.
In one of the most exciting games of the Quad Nations T20 Cup – Arjun Menon Memorial, Tanzania chased down a daunting 209 posted by Bahrain to seal the six-wicket victory.
Even though Bahrain set a big target with 209/5 in 20 overs, once they batted first, the Kassim Nassoro-led Tanzania rose to the challenge.
Fiaz Ahmed, slotted in at number three, once again displayed his resilience and hammered a 35-ball 61 for the batting squad.
There were also solid batting showing by openers, Asif Ali who scored 40 runs and Prashant Kurup, who garnered 32 runs, saw to it that Bahrain's quest to set up a challenging target is realised.
Sohail Ahmed scored 29 runs not out, forging a solid stand with Junaid Aziz and seeing to it that Bahrain crossed the 200-mark. Aziz ended up with 14 runs not out.
Imran Anwar also made his presence count after securing a nine-ball 22.
Tanzania's pace bowler Ally Mpeka had the most noticeable showing when they fielded- taking 2-45 in his four-over quota.
Tanzania replied with 215/4 in just 19.2 overs in what turned out to be a fearless chase led by the in-form top-order batsman Arun Yadav.
The cricketer smashed 84 runs at a strike rate of 262 to deserve the Player of the Match prize.
There were further noticeable efforts by Ajith Augastin, Mukesh Maker, and Dhrumit Mehta as the East African nation's team determinedly reached the tricky target.
Augastin scored 61 runs not out, nailing six fours and three sixes, Maker garnered 30 runs, ably backed up by Mehta's 20 runs.
Bahrain's loss to Tanzania meant every participating squad in the showpiece has lost a game.
The Quad Nations T20 Cup is, as per Cricket Malawi, hosted in memory of the association's Operations Manager Arjun Menon, who passed away recently.
The showpiece is further offering Associate Member countries a chance to regularly take part in competitive events, thereby boosting cricket development in the respective countries.
Tanzania's senior national cricket team, taking part in the competition, comprises Umar Basha, Salum Jumbe, Raymond Francis, Mukesh Maker, Mohamed Simba, Laksh Bakrania, and Khalid Amiri.
Kassim Nassoro, Dhrumit Mehta, Arun Yadav, Ally Mpeka, Ally Hafidh, Ajith Augastin, and Acrey Paschal also make the squad.
