DESPITE trailing league leaders Young Africans (58 points) by ten points and Simba SC (54 points) by six, Azam FC head coach Rachid Taoussi remains confident that his team can secure a top-two finish.
Currently sitting in third place with 48 points, Azam have two games in hand over Simba and one over Young Africans, providing them with a chance to close the gap.
However, achieving this goal will require a strong run of form in the remaining fixtures.
Taoussi’s optimism follows Azam FC’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Tanzania Prisons - a much-needed win that ended a streak of three consecutive league draws.
Prior to this victory, Azam had struggled to maintain momentum after drawing with Coastal Union, Simba, and Namungo.
The win has reignited hope among players and fans, bolstering their push for a top-two finish.
With 48 points, Azam currently hold third place, four points ahead of Singida Black Stars in fourth.
Their primary objective remains securing a CAF Champions League spot for next season.
Speaking about the performance against Tanzania Prisons, Taoussi praised his team’s discipline and efficiency in front of goal, stressing the need for consistency.
"The team played with great discipline, created numerous chances, and capitalized on them effectively. This victory is crucial for our players’ morale, and we must maintain this momentum in upcoming matches," he said.
The Moroccan tactician remains confident that Azam can break into the top two if they sustain the level of play demonstrated in their recent match.
"We know the competition is tough, but we have a strong squad that can fight until the end of the season. We need consecutive wins to achieve our goals," he added.
With Azam eliminated from the Federation Cup and the upcoming FIFA international break, Taoussi now has ample time to fine-tune his squad for a crucial run of matches.
Their next three fixtures present varied challenges: April 3: KenGold FC, a team battling relegation; April 6: Singida Black Stars, aiming for a top-four finish and April 10: A highly anticipated clash against league leaders Young Africans.
Azam's aspirations for a top-two finish remain within reach, but their upcoming matches will be decisive in determining their fate.
