DEPUTY Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, has praised a Chinese construction company for its remarkable progress on the construction of the Arusha football stadium, which will be one of the venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The deputy minister said the project represents a significant milestone in the ever-strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Tanzania and China.

Speaking over the weekend during an event marking the completion of the first phase of concrete construction and the beginning of roof installation, Mwinjuma expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the work being done by the China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG).

“This project is building not just infrastructure, but also relationships - between individuals, between Chinese and local companies, and among small contractors and local experts,” Mwinjuma said. “It is facilitating knowledge transfer, enhancing efficiency, and further strengthening the ties between the Governments of Tanzania and China.”

Mwinjuma, popularly known by his stage name Mwana Fa, lauded the contractor for completing the first phase 20 days ahead of schedule - a rare achievement in the country.

“This contract for the construction of the AFCON stadium in Arusha was signed on March 19, 2024, and official work began on July 25, after site handover and other preliminary procedures. The contractor was tasked with designing, building, and procuring all necessary materials for the project according to the set specifications,” he said.

He further noted that concrete pouring began on November 25, 2024, and within just 236 days, approximately 50,000 cubic meters of concrete had been laid, showcasing the contractor's professionalism and expertise.

“This remarkable progress gives the Government and other stakeholders great confidence that the stadium will be completed on time and meet international standards,” the deputy minister added.

The project is slated for completion by July 24, 2026, in time for the 2027 AFCON. Mwinjuma credited the success so far to the government's timely payments, smooth coordination with other state agencies, and effective on-site oversight by the ministry's appointed consultant, Dar Al-Handasah, and the resident Clerk of Works.

He emphasized that this initiative is part of the broader development agenda of the Sixth Phase Government, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aimed at promoting sports, nurturing talent, and creating a healthier society.

“I encourage all contractors and stakeholders involved to continue working with dedication. History is being made here, and we should be proud to be part of it,” he said.

Arusha Regional Commissioner (RC), Kenani Kihongosi, echoed the deputy minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the project’s importance both as a national development priority and a regional economic stimulant.

“This stadium is among the major projects being implemented under the Sixth Phase Government, with an investment of over TZS 338 billion. As someone passionate about sports, I am confident this infrastructure will benefit future generations, especially youth,” Kihongosi said.

He affirmed his office’s continued support to ensure the project is completed within the timeline and to the highest standards. The RC also highlighted the project’s contribution to employment and entrepreneurship, especially among local youth and women.

“Once completed, the stadium will create jobs, boost local businesses linked to sports and entertainment, and support tourism and national revenue generation. This project is vital, and I eagerly await its completion,” he added.

Kihongosi urged all stakeholders to uphold transparency, fairness, and accountability in managing project funds and timelines, emphasizing that this would ensure value for money and reinforce bilateral relations with China.

CRCEG chairman Wang Yusheng expressed his appreciation to the Tanzanian government and stakeholders for their unwavering support.

“Since the start of this project on July 25, 2024, we’ve faced and overcome many challenges. Thanks to the teamwork and determination of everyone involved, we’ve completed the concrete phase in just 360 days - 20 days ahead of schedule. This is a significant milestone,” Wang stated.

He described the stadium as a symbol of China-Tanzania cooperation and a contribution to the One Belt, One Road Initiative.

“This stadium will provide a new platform for football, enhance Tanzania’s image, support economic development in Arusha, and strengthen bilateral ties,” he said. “We still have many steps ahead, but we are determined to complete the project on time and with the highest quality.”

Wang concluded by reaffirming the contractor’s commitment to meeting the July 2026 completion deadline and supporting Tanzania’s preparations for a successful 2027 AFCON.

“This stadium will stand as a testament to our shared commitment and the enduring friendship between China and Tanzania,” he said.
