THE Mara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Evans Mtambi, has called for enhanced preparations to boost the region’s performance in national school sports competitions - the Inter-Secondary Schools (UMISSETA) and Inter-Primary Schools (UMITASHUMTA) tournaments.
Speaking in Musoma recently, Colonel Mtambi issued the directive while receiving six trophies won by the region, and commended the participating teams for their outstanding achievements.
Mara Region was crowned second overall in the 2025 UMITASHUMTA national competitions, which were held in Iringa Region.
“In the history of sports in this country, Mara Region has consistently produced excellent athletes. If we plan strategically and strengthen our preparations, we can achieve even greater success,” said Colonel Mtambi.
He further emphasized the importance of identifying and nurturing talented students in various sports, recommending closer collaboration with sports associations to support and develop young athletes’ potential.
Presenting a report on the competitions, Assistant Regional Administrative Secretary for Education, Makwasa Bulenga, revealed that Mara Region secured a total of six trophies and 50 medals—five trophies and 31 medals from UMITASHUMTA, and one trophy and 19 medals from UMISSETA.
“In the UMITASHUMTA games, Mara ranked second nationally out of 31 competing regions, while in UMISSETA, we finished 17th out of 28 regions,” Bulenga noted.
He highlighted the region’s strong performance in women’s athletics, men’s athletics, women’s football, women’s handball, and the men's cleanliness and discipline category under UMITASHUMTA. Additionally, Mara topped the men’s athletics category in the UMISSETA games.
To ensure improved results in the coming years, Bulenga stated that the region plans to prioritize the development of sports programs in schools, enhance supervision of athletes at the secondary school level, and invest in better sports infrastructure and equipment across all educational institutions in the region.
