RETIRED General George Waitara has urged broader community participation in golf, emphasizing that the sport should not be perceived as exclusive to the wealthy.
He made these remarks during the award ceremony of the Waitara Trophy 2025, held over the weekend at Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam.
The tournament, named in his honour, saw Edmund Mndolwa crowned the overall champion after a day of intense competition.
Golfers from across the country showcased their skills and sportsmanship, culminating in Mndolwa’s victory at the prestigious event.
In his address, General Waitara congratulated the winners and sponsors while calling for increased investment in golf infrastructure.
“I urge sponsors of various sporting events, including this tournament, to extend their support beyond the competitions themselves. Improving golf course facilities, particularly irrigation systems, is crucial to maintaining quality throughout the year, including during dry seasons,” he stressed.
Reflecting on his win, Mndolwa expressed gratitude to the tournament’s sponsors and commended his fellow competitors for their strong performances.
He also echoed General Waitara’s appeal for improvements in course maintenance, particularly in water management systems.
Speaking on behalf of the tournament’s sponsor, NBC Bank, Aliko Mwamsaku highlighted their commitment to supporting Tanzania’s sports sector.
He noted that beyond promoting sports, they aim to identify new talent, create employment opportunities, and leverage sports as a tool to boost domestic tourism.
“We view golf as a strategic sport that fosters relationship-building among our clients through recreational activities. Ultimately, these connections translate into business opportunities - both personal and institutional,” said Mwamsaku.
He further emphasized that golf serves as an inclusive platform where individuals from diverse backgrounds - regardless of age, gender, or economic status - can engage and connect.
