THE Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the Tanzanian government and agricultural stakeholders to improve seed systems and enhance food production in remote areas.

AGRA has identified seed systems as a key investment area to drive agricultural transformation and help farmers shift from traditional practices to modern cultivation.

Speaking during a national seed stakeholders’ meeting held yesterday in Dodoma, AGRA Program Officer Ipyana Mwakasaka said the organization would continue supporting efforts to improve seed access, research, and capacity building, particularly for smallholder farmers.

“We are joining hands with the government and other stakeholders to increase the production of various crop seeds, expand research on early-maturing and climate-resilient varieties, and ultimately boost productivity,” said Mwakasaka.

He added that AGRA would also help enhance distribution systems, promote farmer education on the benefits of improved seeds, and support quality control and regulatory frameworks conducive to sustainable agriculture.

Mwakasaka reiterated AGRA's full support for the government’s 10/30 Agenda, especially in promoting youth engagement in agriculture through the Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) initiative.

The meeting was graced by Minister for Agriculture Hussein Bashe, who commended the progress in the sector, citing increased public investment and ongoing policy reforms.

“We are witnessing positive changes in agriculture. The investments we make today will bear fruit—even if we are not there to witness them. What matters is laying a strong foundation for national food security,” said Bashe.

He noted that greater youth participation in agriculture would enable them to view the sector as a business, opening up new economic opportunities.

The stakeholder conference provided a strategic platform to strengthen priorities and partnerships in the agricultural sector and promote the expansion of quality seed production in the country.
