ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi is expected to grace the commemoration of the International Women’s Day celebrations on March 6, in Nyamanzi area, highlighting the role of women in driving the islands’ development.

The event, which aligns with the global observance on March 8, will spotlight the progress and ongoing efforts to advance women’s rights in the region.

Minister for Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Riziki Pembe Juma told journalists yesterday here that this year’s celebrations will reflect on the implementation of international, regional and national commitments to women’s rights.

She emphasised the importance of the event as an opportunity for women to come together, share experiences, and discuss strategies to address persistent challenges, especially in economic spheres.

“This day provides a chance to assess the efforts made by the government and stakeholders in combating gender-based violence and discrimination, while fostering new ways to tackle the issues,” minister Pembe said.

She added: “It is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and achievements of women in Zanzibar.”

The theme for this year, "The Participation of Women and Girls as a Catalyst for Development," focuses on encouraging women to engage more actively in economic, social, and political activities, all of which are essential for national progress.

Pembe noted that women’s economic empowerment continues to grow, with more women gaining access to loans to enhance their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

As part of the celebrations, the ministry plans to launch guidelines to help establish and manage women’s economic empowerment platforms.

Additionally, the ministry will offer training for both urban and rural women entrepreneurs, aiming to provide them with essential skills to run successful businesses.
