ZANZIBAR First Vice President Othman Masoud Othman has highlighted the immense potential of Misali Island, located in South Pemba Region, in boosting the island’s tourism industry.

Opening a conference on Misali Island Tourism Project, which focuses on environmental conservation, Othman emphasized the island's rich history and abundant natural resources which make it a prime destination for sustainable tourism.

Othman explained that Misali Island is renowned for its marine resources, including fish, coral reefs, and turtle nesting areas. The government recently entered into an agreement with an investor to manage the island’s tourism operations without compromising its ecological value.

He noted that although the island was previously managed by local stakeholders, the recent partnership with an investor under the Al-Mizaani project will enhance conservation efforts while promoting sustainable tourism.

The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities added that such investment projects are now community-driven, with a strong emphasis on incorporating local opinions and needs into the planning and execution processes.

Experts agree that Misali Island is home to numerous unique historical and natural attractions that are not found in many other parts of East, Central, or Southern Africa. The government is committed to ensuring sustainable development of tourism on the island, guided by the input of industry professionals.

The conference brought together tourism authorities, investment stakeholders and religious organizations, all working towards sustainable tourism practices and enhancement of Zanzibar’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
