Tanzania and Egypt have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation amid rising global and regional security threats.
Defence and National Service Minister, Dr. Stergomena Tax, made the affirmation in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday during the commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of Egypt’s October 6 Victory.
The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, ambassadors, chief of staff of the Tanzania defense forces (TPDF) Lieutenant General Salum Haji Othman, retired and in services government officials and Egyptian nationals living in Tanzania.
Dr Tax, highlighted that the two nations’ shared strategic positions and their growing collaboration in regional peace and stability efforts.
She said the global security landscape was becoming more complex, demanding stronger partnerships between like-minded nations.
“As global threats—both conventional and non-conventional—continue to evolve, we must be proactive, resilient, and collaborative,” she said
“Our defence cooperation must adapt accordingly, grounded in strategic foresight, robust early warning systems, and innovative, homegrown solutions,” she added.
Dr Tax noted that both Tanzania and Egypt occupy critical regional roles, with Tanzania being a key player in the Western Indian Ocean, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the East African Community (EAC), and the Great Lakes Region, while Egypt holds strategic influence across North Africa, the Arab world, and the Red Sea corridor.
She said the commemoration was also an opportunity to reaffirm the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
“Our defence and security institutions continue to grow stronger together collaborating to address common threats, enhance regional stability, and promote peace and development across the African continent,” she added.
Dr Tax also acknowledged Egypt’s contribution to Tanzania’s infrastructure development, particularly the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, which is being implemented with the support of Egyptian firms.
“This project reflects the deep bonds of solidarity between our two nations that began with Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and President Gamal Abdel Nasser,” she said.
Colonel Mokhtar Mohamed Mady, Egypt’s Defence Attaché in Dar es Salaam, praised the Tanzanian Ministry of Defence for its transparency and continued cooperation.
“I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Ministry for its openness and determination to achieve the goals we aspire to. Together, we are advancing a distinguished course of defence cooperation,” he said.
Colonel Mady also paid tribute to the Egyptian Armed Forces, describing the October 6 victory as a symbol of national pride and determination.
He emphasized Egypt’s ongoing fight against terrorism and its commitment to working with Tanzania to address regional security challenges.
The attachee reiterated that bilateral military ties are built on shared values and mutual trust, aimed at fostering peace and countering violence and extremism across the continent.
