THE Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), via its President Advocate Boniface Mwabukusi, today, August 26, 2025, has advised the government, via the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), to withdraw court cases against CHADEMA National Chairman Tundu Lissu, calling the cases politically motivated.

Addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam today August 26, 2025, Mwabukusi said, “Currently, there are ongoing cases in court that are purely political

. He made statements of a similar nature, he was not attacked, another person made the same kind of statement—these are opinions of stakeholders regarding Lissu.

“We advise the government to withdraw them from court; the DPP knows what to do, remove them so Lissu can move on.”

He added, “If the nation wants to heal, we must drop hypocrisy. Lissu spoke openly, and we all know stronger statements have been made than his, but those too are political opinions. For example, when I was campaigning, someone said, ‘How will you vote for Mwabukusi, he has an ugly face?’ I didn’t take it negatively; I brought my wife on stage and asked voters, ‘What do you think of my face?’ My wife said it’s fine, and I asked voters, ‘If my wife is satisfied, who are you to complain?’ That’s politics.”

Mwabukusi concluded, “In politics, we have our ways of speaking. Once you politicize statements and the political context, it becomes an attack on democracy. The government should leave Lissu alone. I repeat: the courts should not be used as nets to catch fish and destroy coral reefs—we say this to heal the nation.”
