YOUNG Africans (Yanga) head coach Romain Folz has responded with calm and composure to growing criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase, who voiced their frustration after the reigning champions were held to a goalless draw by Mbeya City in the Mainland Premier League on Tuesday at the Sokoine Stadium.
The result left many Young Africans fans disheartened, with some going as far as chanting for Folz’s dismissal. Critics argue that despite a solid start to the season in terms of results, the team appears to lack the attacking flair and creativity that has long been associated with the Jangwani Street giants.
Since his appointment, Folz (pictured) has guided Young Africans through an unbeaten five-game run, including a notable 1-0 derby victory over archrivals Simba in the Community Shield and a commanding 3-0 away win against Angola’s Wiliete in the CAF Champions League.
Domestically, Young Africans opened their league campaign with a 3-0 victory over Pamba Jiji before sealing progression in continental competition with a 2-0 second-leg win over Wiliete.
However, the goalless stalemate in Mbeya has sparked concerns that the side is drifting away from its traditional attacking identity. When asked about the negative comments from the stands, Folz struck a conciliatory tone.
“I’m always saying the same thing. People are always entitled to have opinions and we must respect that,” he said. “You were talking about the negative comments that are also positive. It’s the nature of life.
“Everyone is free to express themselves. The only thing I can say is that everything we do is for the fans. We love them and we hope to make them very happy very soon.”
Pressed further on calls for his sacking, the French-Moroccan coach remained unfazed. “It comes with the job. You have to accept it. If you cannot face the critics, you might as well do something else,” Folz added.
While some supporters remain skeptical of his tactical approach, Folz maintains he is committed to delivering both results and performances that will restore confidence. For now, Young Africans remain unbeaten, but the pressure is mounting for the coach to marry winning results with the attractive, attacking football the fans demand.
