AZAM FC midfielder Gibril Sillah has officially announced his departure from the club after two impressive seasons, leaving fans and club officials with mixed emotions.
The Gambian playmaker took to his official Instagram page to say goodbye to the Chamazi-based club, thanking them for what he described as a memorable chapter in his football career.
Sillah (pictured), who arrived at Azam two seasons ago, quickly established himself as a vital cog in the midfield and attacking setup. His contribution has been significant - netting a total of 21 goals during his tenure, with 11 goals coming in the just-concluded season and eight in his debut campaign.
In a heartfelt farewell message, the 25-year-old wrote:
âThank you Azam for everything you have done for me over the past two years. It is difficult for me to say goodbye to a club with which I have both good and bad memories, and I will truly remember them always in my football journey.â
The midfielder, who finished the 2024/2025 season as Azamâs top scorer, also extended his appreciation to his teammates and club staff.
âI wish you good luck next season, but I thank my teammates and Azam staff for their support throughout,â Sillah added.
His emotional departure has come at a time when speculation about his future is intensifying. According to sources close to the situation, Tanzanian football giants Simba and Young Africans (Yanga) are both showing strong interest in acquiring the services of the talented midfielder.
The two archrivals are reportedly keen on boosting their midfield options ahead of the upcoming season, and Sillahâs name has surfaced at the top of their shortlist.
However, despite the growing interest from the two powerhouses of Tanzanian football, Sillah appears to have different plans. In his farewell note, he hinted that he may not continue his career in Tanzania, stating:
âMy life at the club was easy. I will remember Tanzanian football and the country in general because everyone here loves football. It's like playing in Europe due to the passion of the fans. Azam will continue to remain in my heart.â
Throughout his time at Azam, Sillah made 68 official appearances across all competitions, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists a commendable contribution that underlined his consistency and influence on the pitch. His ability to control midfield play, create scoring opportunities, and convert chances made him a fan favorite and a respected figure in Tanzanian football circles.
Sources indicate that Azam made a strong effort to keep Sillah at the club, offering him a contract extension following his stellar performances this season. However, the player reportedly declined the offer, signaling his desire to take on a new challenge.
Young Africans were previously rumored to have initiated talks with Sillah as they look to strengthen their squad for both local and continental competitions. Despite the speculation, no formal confirmation has been made from the clubâs hierarchy, and it remains unclear whether any offer was officially tabled.
Simba, on the other hand, are in the midst of a squad overhaul under head coach Fadlu Davids and are believed to be actively scouting midfielders capable of injecting creativity and experience into their squad - qualities Sillah undeniably possesses.
While the midfielder's next destination remains uncertain, what is clear is the void he leaves behind at Azam. His departure marks the end of a productive chapter, not just for the club but for Tanzanian football as a whole, which benefited from his flair, determination, and professionalism on and off the pitch.
