KILWA District Commissioner Mohamed Nyundo has urged area residents involved in fishing industry to seize the economic opportunities created by the construction of the new Kilwa Fishing Port.
Speaking here last week during a visit to inspect the project at Kilwa Masoko, Nyundo emphasized the importance of proactive participation from the community to ensure they benefit from the developments, including potential employment at the port.
Currently under construction by China Harbour Company, the port is over 85 percent, with a projected value of 266bn/-. The project is part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting fisheries sector, generating employment, and improving the livelihoods of residents in Kilwa and surrounding areas.
Nyundo encouraged residents not to wait for government instructions, urging them to position themselves now to benefit from the port once completed. “It is important for the people of Kilwa to take advantage of the opportunities ahead instead of waiting to be instructed by the government,” he said.
During his site visit, Nyundo met with contractors and the project’s supervisory team, who confirmed that the construction was progressing smoothly. This aligns with a recent inspection by Lindi Regional Commissioner, Zainab Telacky, who also expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, stressing the importance of completing it on time to maximize the economic impact for the local community.
Once completed, the port will transform the region’s infrastructure, supporting deep-sea fishing, fish processing, and the efficient export of marine products. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the successful delivery of such strategic projects, with the aim of achieving sustainable development goals across the country.
It is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering economic growth in the region and improving the welfare of local communities, presenting numerous opportunities in the fishing, transport, and logistics sectors.
