AIRTEL Tanzania has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zanzibar Communication and ICT Infrastructure Agency (ZICTIA), setting the stage for a long-term partnership to accelerate digital transformation and expand access to modern communication services across the islands.

The MoU, signed at an official ceremony in Zanzibar and witnessed by senior government officials and industry stakeholders, outlines a framework for collaboration on key infrastructure projects aimed at improving broadband connectivity, enhancing digital inclusion, and delivering technology-driven community support services.

Speaking during the event at the weekend, Zanzibar Minister for Infrastructure, Communication and Transport, Khalid Salum Mohammed, hailed the agreement as a milestone in advancing the government’s digital agenda.

“Airtel Tanzania and ZICTIA’s partnership today marks a crucial foundation towards real implementation of projects that will directly benefit our citizens on digital inclusion,” he said. “We believe in public-private partnerships, not just as policy, but as a practical pathway to accelerate e-government, e-learning, e-health and e-commerce—especially in underserved communities.”

Airtel Tanzania Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, said the partnership underlines Airtel’s role as more than a telecom operator.

“This MoU reflects Airtel’s commitment to being more than a telecommunications provider. We are investing in infrastructure and partnerships that empower communities, support government priorities, and position Zanzibar for a future defined by innovation and inclusive growth,” he noted.

ZICTIA Director General, Shukuru Awadh Suleiman, emphasized the importance of leveraging partnerships to unlock the potential of Zanzibar’s ICT sector.

“Through this partnership with Airtel, we are not only expanding our infrastructure footprint but enabling a more connected society where citizens, businesses and government institutions benefit from reliable, secure and high-capacity digital services,” he said.

Beyond infrastructure, the MoU will also promote financial inclusion by making digital financial services more accessible and convenient for users, supporting Zanzibar’s broader socio-economic development goals.

The signing marks a new chapter in Airtel’s role as a key enabler of digital development in Zanzibar, aligning with the government’s ambition to create a digitally inclusive society.
