The Port of Mtwara is drawing growing international attention as Tanzania strengthens its role in regional trade through major infrastructure upgrades.
With the construction of a modern berth capable of accommodating large cargo vessels, the port is now positioned as a strategic hub for global markets and a powerful magnet for foreign investment.
The improvements are part of the government’s broader push to expand the country’s logistics capacity, boost exports, and enhance trade routes across Southern Tanzania and into neighboring nations.
The upgraded facilities have already started attracting interest from global players eager to tap into East and Southern Africa’s growing economies.
One such indication came with the visit of Andrew Lentz, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, who toured the port to explore economic and investment opportunities. Lentz expressed satisfaction with the developments and highlighted America’s willingness to collaborate with Tanzania in utilizing Mtwara as a gateway for international commerce.
Local authorities say the transformation of the port reflects increased confidence in Tanzania’s investment environment.
Mtwara Regional Commissioner Colonel Sawala credited President Samia Suluhu Hassan for advancing the country’s global economic footprint.
“This progress is the result of clear, focused economic diplomacy under our current leadership,” Sawala said.
He added: “The improved port infrastructure, coupled with a stable business environment, creates real opportunities for trade and development that benefit our citizens.”
He also emphasized the broader impact of such investments, noting that the increase in trade through Mtwara could stimulate job creation, boost tourism, and drive regional growth.
Tanzania’s diplomatic and commercial relationships with global partners continue to expand, with trade and investment taking priority. As the country eyes deeper integration into continental and international markets, the Port of Mtwara stands out as a key national asset—connecting Tanzania not just to the sea, but to the world.
