MOROCCO’s bid for a third African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 crown has been anything but straightforward, with the Atlas Lions navigating early setbacks, tactical recalibration, and hard-fought victories to reach the last four of the tournament.
The defending champions from 2018 and 2020 entered the competition as favourites, but their group-stage opener at Kasarani Stadium ended in a shock 1–0 defeat to hosts Kenya, triggering doubts over their readiness.
The setback, however, became the turning point of their campaign.
A Wake-Up Call in Nairobi
The loss in Nairobi exposed vulnerabilities in an experienced Moroccan squad.
For coach Tarik Sektioui, it was a reminder that past glories count for little in the CHAN.
“That game showed us that in CHAN there is no room for distractions. We had to return to basics: organisation, patience, and efficiency,” said a member of his technical staff.
Redemption Against DR Congo
Seven days later in Nyayo, Morocco reasserted themselves with a 3–1 win over DR Congo.
Oussama Lamlioui netted twice, while Mohamed Rabie Hrimat converted a penalty to secure second place in the group behind Kenya.
The display showcased controlled possession and clinical finishing, signalling the return of a side capable of mounting a serious title challenge.
Tactical Triumph in Dar es Salaam
The quarter-final against Tanzania was another stern test.
Playing in front of a passionate 41,000-strong crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Morocco remained composed under pressure.
A disciplined tactical performance delivered a narrow 1–0 victory, sending the Atlas Lions into the semi-finals.
“We knew it would be a tactical battle. We played with our heads, because at this stage the mind matters as much as the legs,” Sektioui reflected.
Tradition Meets Responsibility
With two CHAN trophies already in their cabinet, Morocco’s progression carries both pride and expectation.
The journey so far has reinforced that titles are not won on history alone but through resilience and adaptability.
Lamlioui and Hrimat have been central to their revival, but Sektioui’s emphasis on discipline and mental strength has underpinned their campaign.
“We didn’t come this far to stop. The aim is to lift the trophy once more,” the coach declared.
