The government announced a record 11.7 million tonnes of maize produced in the 2024/25 season, marking the highest ever production to date.

National Food Reserve Agency released a net total of 1,855.3 tonnes of maize in July to ease supply, at a time when the commodity price is easing, after escalating during the first and second quarter of this year.

Despite this drawdown, the Agency maintained a robust stock level of 485,930.4 tonnes, which was significantly higher than the 368,855 tonnes recorded during the same period in 2024.

Latest data by the ministry of industry and trade, this increase was primarily attributed to good harvests in the preceding crop season and adequate budgetary allocations for strategic grain procurement.

The government announced a record 11.7 million tonnes of maize produced in the 2024/25 season, marking the highest ever production to date.

This achievement made Tanzania the third-largest maize producer in Africa for that year.

Looking ahead, the government has set a target of 15 million tonnes by the 2025/26 season, underpinned by strategies such as fertilizer subsidies, land registration, and improved farming inputs.

Tanzania’s maize production has experienced remarkable growth—anchored by strong subsidies, infrastructure investments, and supportive policy frameworks. If these efforts continue, hitting the 15-million-tonne target for 2025/26 looks achievable.
