BAHI District in Dodoma Region is poised to become a major hub for trade and economic activity, following plans to establish a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station and a dry port in the area.

CCM presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan announced during a campaign rally today (September 9) in Bahi that the projects would stimulate trade, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the district’s connectivity with other parts of Tanzania and the wider East African region.

“The establishment of the SGR station and dry port in Bahi will not only facilitate smoother transportation of goods but will also provide opportunities for local businesses and residents to benefit directly from increased trade activities,” she said.

Addressing concerns about residents affected by ongoing infrastructure projects, Samia assured that compensation is already underway and will be completed once verification is finalised. “We are committed to ensuring fairness for all those impacted by these developments,” she added.

The SGR, a flagship initiative in Tanzania’s transport sector, is part of the government’s long-term plan to modernize the railway network, reduce transportation costs, and boost industrial growth.

The dry port in Bahi is expected to improve the movement of imports and exports, ease congestion at coastal ports, and enhance logistics efficiency nationwide.

Samia emphasized that all social safeguards, including fair compensation and resettlement support for affected communities, will be strictly observed.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the announcement, noting that the projects could transform Bahi from a predominantly agricultural district into a thriving commercial hub.

The Bahi SGR station and dry port are expected to become operational within the next few years, marking a significant milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to drive regional economic growth, integration, and employment opportunities.
