President Samia hails press freedom, urges media unity ahead of elections

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed pride in Tanzania's progress in press freedom, as she commemorates World Press Freedom Day.

She highlighted the country’s improved global ranking for 2025 and acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders in the media sector.

In a statement via  her X post @suluhusamia, President Samia said, “I am pleased to see the significant progress we have made in strengthening press freedom. In 2025, Tanzania has moved up in the global press freedom rankings, reflecting the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this important sector.”

The President also urged media outlets to uphold professionalism, particularly with the upcoming general election. 

“The media plays a vital role not only in government affairs but also in fostering peace, stability, and national unity. As we near the election, I encourage all media to contribute to ensuring a peaceful and united Tanzania,” she added.

President Samia concluded by reaffirming the essential role of press freedom in strengthening democracy and national unity.
