Samia pledges Malagarasi River mega power project to boost Kigoma’s electricity supply

THE production of over 46 megawatts of electricity from the Malagarasi River is set to transform Kigoma Region’s power supply and unlock new opportunities for industrial and economic growth.

CCM presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan pledged this today when addressing thousands of supporters in Buhigwe and Kasulu during her campaign tour of the region.
Samia told residents that her government, if re-elected, will ensure that the Malagarasi hydropower project is fully implemented to provide reliable and affordable electricity not only to Kigoma but also to neighbouring regions.
She stressed that energy is the foundation of development, adding that without stable power supply, industries, schools, hospitals, and households cannot thrive.
“This project will be a game changer for Kigoma,” Samia said. “It will stimulate the growth of factories, create thousands of jobs, and enable small and large businesses to operate without constant disruptions caused by power shortages.
The Malagarasi power plant is part of a wider government strategy to connect every Tanzanian hamlet to electricity. Already, Kigoma has seen remarkable progress in energy development, with 109bn/- invested to link the region to the national grid. A further 300bn/- mega power project at Kazuramimba Ward is also underway, marking unprecedented investment in the area.
Alongside energy and infrastructure, Dr Samia highlighted heavy investment in social services. In Uvinza and Kasulu, the government has built new health centres, expanded dispensaries, and upgraded facilities to reduce the burden on residents who previously travelled long distances for medical services.
Education has also received significant attention, with over 246 new classrooms constructed in Kasulu Urban, alongside teachers’ houses and improved learning facilities. “These investments are about the future of our children and the prosperity of our nation,” Samia said.
Zainabu Katimba, CCM Special Seats candidate, told the gathering that alongside power projects, the government has secured 165bn/- for the construction and rehabilitation of ships in Lake Victoria, ensuring Kigoma is better connected to other regions and international markets.
CCM Kigoma South parliamentary aspirant, Nuru Issa Kashakari, praised the government’s efforts, noting that four new health centres, a VETA college, and more than 40 schools have already been built in the constituency
He pointed out that the Kazuramimba power project and Uvinza–Nguruka tarmac road are clear evidence of the government’s commitment to improving lives in Kigoma.
However, Kashakari asked Samia to prioritise upgrading Nguruka Health Centre to a full hospital and to tarmac the Simbo–Karia road to enhance mobility, especially during rainy seasons.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda, who is coordinating CCM’s West Zone campaign, urged Tanzanians to safeguard peace and national unity as the country heads to the polls. “Our development is anchored on peace. Let us not allow a few voices to mislead us into conflict,” he said.
