THE Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) has stated that its elective general meeting will be held in Morogoro on October 4.

The TOC president, Gulam Rashid (pictured), confirmed the committee's election date, pointing out that more details about the exercise will be made public today.

“As you are all aware of the directive of the International Olympics Committee (IOC), we should hold the elections this month, we wrote them that we are ready for the elections, but, it will be the first week of October as this month we have the Africa National Olympics (ANOCA)assembly in Mozambique and also we will have the Taekwondo seminar, IOC has accepted our request,” he said, adding that the TOC election committee will today announce the process of elections.

The election was initially slated for last December in Dodoma, and, in the IOC's letter to TOC, it ordered TOC to have an elective general assembly this month without any further delay.

The letter, signed by IOC president Jerome Poivey, said: "Further to our latest self-explanatory communication below, dated February 28, 2025, and our numerous telephone conversations over the past few months and weeks, we wish to reiterate that your NOC (National Olympic Committee) should now proceed and convene its quadrennial Elective General Assembly without any further delay."

The IOC said it has directed TOC to hold its elective general assembly after the committee's constitution has been adopted by its general assembly, which was held on December 28 last year.

Part of the IOC letter said: "Consequently, we do not see any valid reason to keep postponing your NOC quadrennial election, which should now simply take place in accordance with the Olympic charter and your NOC constitution currently in force, as adopted by your NOC general assembly and approved by the IOC."

In the previous interview, TOC vice president Henry Tandau said they will adhere to the IOC directive. He, however, said they will write the IOC informing the latter that the election should be held in early October.

"IOC has written us to hold the election this month, but, to us, it will be a challenge, given that, at the end of this month, some of our delegates will attend the ANOCA meeting in Mozambique, we also have a seminar for Taekwondo, we hope they agree with us on this," he said.

Before its postponement, the election, which attracted 27 contenders, was slated for December 14 in Dodoma last year.

Twelve positions are up for grabs in the coming TOC election. This is in accordance with TOC's recent amendments of its constitution, that has changed the portfolios of secretary-general and treasurer from elected to employed.

Those who collected forms to contest for the TOC presidency are Michael Washa, Anthony Mtaka, Henry Tandau, and Nasra Mohammed. The battle for the TOC vice presidency has attracted two candidates, Suleiman Jabir and Jamal Iddi.

The executive committee will include five members from Mainland Tanzania and as many from Zanzibar, with either side required to have at least two female candidates. The TOC emphasized that gender balance will be a priority, ensuring that female candidates are adequately represented. The previous TOC election commission is led by chairman Mkwawa, vice chairman Malangwe Ali Mchungahela, and secretary Halfani Omari.
